Background

SHAL is a firm of consulting engineers who specialize in the planning and design of marine structures and shoreline protection. Many past assignments have been carried out in association with waterfront planners and other professionals for the planning and design of waters edge promenades, marinas and waterfront developments. Past projects have included new construction as well as the inspection and evaluation of existing structures. SHAL have executed a considerable number of projects along the Lake Ontario shoreline as well as within the remainder of the Great Lakes.

Involvement with a wide variety of shoreline types and physical site conditions give the staff at SHAL considerable expertise in the factors involved in the design of shoreline treatments and marine structures. This includes soil conditions, interaction of various types of structures with soils, varying water levels, ice conditions and forces, wave exposure, current forces, scour and erosion.

As a result of continuous involvement with projects within Ontario, the Firm has up-to-date knowledge of the requirements of the various approval agencies. Because SHAL's work is marine oriented, mitigation measures for fish habitat are routinely considered.
